Defense Minister Ehud Barak blamed the Flotilla organizers for inciting the attack, while his deputy, Danny Alalon said they were connected to international terrorist organizations and were trying to smuggle in arms. Weapons were found on board, he claimed.

At a hastily called news conference, sparsely attended, he referred to "the armada of hate and violence in support of the Hamas terror organization," accusing peaceful activists of a "premeditated and outrageous provocation," saying "The organizers are well known for their ties with global Jihad, Al Qaeda and Hamas. (Their) intent was violent, their method was violent, and the results were unfortunately violent."

Shameless lies from a criminal caught red-handed, Haaretz's Gideon Levy saying:

"The Israeli propaganda machine has reached new highs (distributing) false information. It embarrassed itself by entering a futile public relations battle....There is nothing to explain, certainly not to a world that will never buy (its) web of explanations, lies and tactics."

Israeli forces planned and executed a premeditated attack against peaceful humanitarian activists, trying to deliver essential to life aid to Gazans under siege - to break Israel's attempt to suffocate and starve them.

It (Al Jazeera) also said Israeli radio confirmed at least 19 were killed and dozens injured, quoting IDF spokeswoman, Avital Leibovich, saying, "This happened in waters outside Israeli territory, but we have the right to defend ourselves," - the usual response from scoundrels caught red-handed.

Video footage on board the Turkish passenger ship Mavi Marmara showed Israeli commandos opened fire during the assault, activists saying it began immediately after storming on board.

Al Jazeera's Jamal Elshayyal, on the ship, said "a white surrender flag was raised (and) there was no live fire coming from the passengers."

Netanyahu's spokesman, Mark Regev, claimed "They initiated the violence," and the IDF insisted it responded when its forces "were attacked with knives, clubs, and even live fire." Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi said soldiers were forced by violent acts to respond with live fire. They lied.

Viewing the video footage, (see above) Al Jazeera's Ayman Mohyeldin reported that:

"All the images being shown from the activists on board those ships show clearly that they were civilians and peaceful in nature, with medical (and other humanitarian) supplies on board."

In addition, a video released by Israeli authorities is circulating on You Tube entitled, Demonstrators Use Violence Against Israeli Navy Soldiers Attempting to Board Ship, which ludicrously claims to show activists attacking troops unprovoked, without mentioning the fact that troops aggressively boarded the vessel outside of Israeli territory with the aid of army helicopters and heavily armed IDF soldiers before the activists did anything. In reality, the video shows very little because it is shot from a perspective where the people on board look like ants and almost nothing can be deciphered from this. Comments were disabled on the video to prevent people from making this criticism.

The video “helpfully explain[s] what you’re supposed to see,” writes one Israeli journalist.

“And, of course, the clip only contains the footage the IDF wanted to release; we don’t know what happened before or after this 60 seconds of video,” reports Al Jazeera.

Dawn Welsh of Hillsboro, MO Arrested for Trespassing in Her Own Home After Supposed Mortgage Scam. Dawn Welsh knows her house was paid off. She received paperwork from the original mortgage company showing it was paid off. However through a fraudulent conversion of the mortgage, Wachovia Bank claimed authority of the mortgage and then claimed Welsh still owed on her home despite her having proof from the original bank that the note was paid in full.

Today, (May 13th) Hillsboro, Missouri police came onto her property and broke her door down to remove her from her property.

They used a battering ram to enter her home, despite her showing evidence that she owned the property. She had gone to court previously and showed a judge the mortgage was paid in full, and it is a record of the court.

However, these are desperate times for the fraudulent vampirian banksters and they will go after anyone they want, threatening innocent hard-working Americans at every turn. And to top it off the Hillsboro sheriff was an accomplice to this crime, executing the fraudulent crime and rubbing it in further by seizing all of the 54-year-old woman's possessions.

When these mortgages are sold from the original mortgagee to another bank, an illegal conversion takes place. No valid contract is ever initiated between the mortgage holder and this new entity. In fact many people wind up in court after they are told they owe more money on their homes after a series of mortgages being pushed back and forth through the mortgage process.

Wachovia Mortgage took over the mortgage and said they weren't going to honor the paperwork from the previous mortgagee and continued to harass this woman. So we have a woman with the proper papers showing her house is paid off with the police and the courts ignoring the paperwork

Alex Jones You Tube Channel has been PULLED by You Tube

Radio and internet journalist Alex Jones has been censored by the internet giant YouTube with the removal of the "Alex Jones Channel" from the site, causing revulsion across the United States and Europe, in what is increasingly being seen as another example of a "Big Brother" intervention in the democratic process.

The "Alex Jones show" on YouTube was attracting around 1 million views a week, and was responsible for the "The Obama Deception" which has clocked 1,897,810 views.

YouTube apparently pulled the "Alex Jones Channel" from its site for a potential legal action from a US newspaper claiming a potential copyright breach over Jones use of its articles on his radio programme.

Increasingly YouTube has been scorned for its move away from its foundation of "free speech video" to being seen as part of the establishment it tried to redefine when it was first established.

Congress wrote a law where they specifically included "All products" for children 12 and under, and they are surprised to discover it included books. What does that tell you about the consideration they gave it, the time they spent on it, the gravitas of their deliberations? Or did none of them read as children or allow their children to read? The Common Room

We own a small, local used bookstore and have been selling used books on the Internet since 1995. Last year we shipped over 4500 used books to nearly 50 countries. (Note that CPSIA not only regulates distribution and sale but export as well.)

Our bookstore is the sole means of income for our family, and we currently have over 7000 books catalogued. Many of our older children’s books have painted decorative titles and other cover embellishment, which decoration is an extremely small quantity and which may or may not contain over 600 ppm lead. (The limits for each accessible part or paint layer are going to 300 ppm in August and 100 ppm in 2011.)

I wasn’t thrilled with the exception stating that we can sell pre-1985 children’s books as long as they are pricey vintage collectibles for adult collectors. Um, great, but most of our children’s books, even our older children’s books, are sold for children to read. And read them, they do.

We ran an audit in our bookstore today. Of our children’s chapter books, about 65% are pre-1985. Of our children’s picture books, about 35% are pre-1985. Most of these sell for under $10 and are stocked as children’s reading.

As an ethical matter, I really can’t discard our cultural heritage just because the CPSC has decreed that books published through *1984* may or may not still form a legal part of the canon of children’s literature for our culture.

I was willing to resist the censorship of 1984 and the Fire Department of Fahrenheit 451 long before I became a bookseller, so I’d love to run a black market in quality children’s books–but at the same time it’s not like the CPSC has never destroyed a small, harmless company before. It’s a scary thing to know that what you are doing is a positive good for the community–and yet possibly, strangely illegal.

On Thursday Sept 15, 2008 at roughly 11 AM The Federal Reserve noticed a tremendous draw down of money market accounts in the USA to the tune of $550 Billion dollars in a matter of an hour or two.

Within an hour, some $550 billion was electronically withdrawn from the money market accounts. The claim is that had the government not blocked further withdrawals and stared poffering guarantees, the US and World economies would have been collapsed. Maybe.

Obviously there are theories all around as to what happened, and mine is very simple.

Wall Street knew they were in trouble. The American people were no longer asking for new loans that could create new money that would be used to pay the interest on old loans. Collapse was imminent, and worse, the American people rightly blamed the financial shysters for their poverty. People were starting to sue the mortgage lenders and the mortgage-back securities fraudsters.

So the investment banks and brokerages and loan companies pulled off a scam. Working through overseas "cut-outs" they yanked $500 billion dollars to put a scare into the US Government, then turned around and warned that if the bailout was not passed, they would collapse the US economy itself and shift the blame onto the government.

This theory explains the absolute total panic we saw in Congress as they ramrodded through the first bailout despite overwhelming taxpayer opposition.

And the problem is that is this theory is correct, and the Wall Street "Bernies" are blackmailing the US Government with their own financial doomsday weapon, then the bailouts will continue, as blackmailers never stop on their own.

This may be why, even as Congress passes this most recent bailout, word is already coming from the White House that yet another trillion and a half bailout is already being planned.

The Chief Rabbinate of Israel has cut ties with the Vatican over the Pope’s decision to lift the excommunication of an English bishop who denies the full extent of the Holocaust.

In a measure of Jewish anger around the world at the reinstating of the four bishops of the Society of St Pius X, the Chief Rabbinate has written to the office of Pope Benedict XVI condemning Bishop Richard Williamson’s comments as outrageous. The letter was leaked to The Jerusalem Post. Jewish leaders in the UK have also protested at the lifting of the excommunications but others criticised the Chief Rabbinate’s decision, saying it could harm interfaith dialogue.

Bishop Williamson, who was educated at Winchester and Cambridge and converted to Catholicism as a young man, told Swedish television that no Jews died in gas chambers, and that up to 300,000 died in the Holocaust. Historians generally accept that six million Jews died.

I personally agree with every word the bishop said. BUT I think the number of jewish deaths may have been higher - anywhere from half a million to 1 million. I will say this though. If the Nazis had a policy of extermination and were killing the mothers, the babies and the young children - then something is wrong with the jewish history - because you just need to look at all the photos and see the HUGE number of children who survived. This alone has been my argument against the jewish holocaust happening exactly the way the jews claim it did.

Yes many Jews died, I am NOT denying that. BUT they died either of disease (typhus or dysentery) or they were shot. Like the Bishop says, I just dont think 6 million jews were gassed.

Now I will probably get some flack for this, but that's ok. I have had it before and I beat the jewish doctor who slammed me over another similar post. When he could NOT refute my arguments, he "ran away". He told me to not contact him anymore.

Obama's orders leave framework of torture, indefinite detention intact

On Thursday, President Barack Obama issued executive orders mandating the closure of the Guantánamo Bay prison camp in a year’s time, requiring that Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and military personnel follow the Army Field Manual’s prohibitions on torture, and closing secret CIA prisons overseas.

While the media is portraying these orders as a repudiation of the detention and interrogation policies of the Bush administration, they actually change little. They essentially represent a public relations effort to refurbish the image of the United States abroad after years of torture and extralegal detentions and shield high-ranking American officials from potential criminal prosecution.

In cowardly fashion, Obama staged his signing of the orders in a manner aimed at placating the political right and defenders of Guantánamo and torture and underscoring his intention to continue the Bush administration’s “war on terror.” He was flanked by 16 retired generals and admirals who have pushed for the closure of the prison camp in Cuba on the grounds that it impedes the prosecution of the global “war” and reiterated in his own remarks his determination to continue the basic political framework of the Bush administration’s foreign policy.

The continuation of the ideological pretext for wars of aggression and attacks on democratic rights ensures that the police state infrastructure erected under the Bush administration will remain intact. This is further reinforced by Obama’s assurances that his administration will not investigate or prosecute those officials—including Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Alberto Gonzales and others—who were responsible for the policies of torture and illegal detention.

The orders signed by Obama do not undo the Bush administration’s attacks on constitutional and international law. They do not challenge the supposed right of the president to unilaterally imprison any individual, without trial and without charges, by declaring him to be an “enemy combatant.” Nor do they end the procedure known as “extraordinary rendition,” by which the United States during the Bush years kidnapped alleged terrorists and shipped them to foreign countries or secret CIA prisons outside the US, where they were subjected to torture.

They do not affect the hundreds of prisoners—600 at the Bagram prison camp in Afghanistan alone—incarcerated beyond the barbed wire of Guantánamo. If and when Guantánamo is closed, the US government will simply ship alleged terrorists caught up its international dragnet to other American-run prison camps.

On the question of so-called “harsh interrogation techniques,” i.e., torture, Obama’s orders leave room for their continuation. White House Counsel Gregory Craig told reporters the administration was prepared to take into account demands from the CIA that such methods be allowed. Obama announced the creation of a task force that will consider new interrogation methods beyond those sanctioned by the Army Field Manual, which now accepts 19 forms of interrogation, as well as the practice of extraordinary rendition.

Retired Admiral Dennis Blair, Obama’s nominee for director of national intelligence, told a Senate confirmation hearing that the Army Field Manual would itself be changed, potentially allowing new forms of harsh interrogation, but that such changes would be kept secret.

Obama also announced a second task force that is to consider the fate of the 245 detainees remaining at Guantánamo. Earlier this week he suspended the military commission procedures at the prison camp, but has not abolished the military commissions themselves.

The new administration has ruled out the only constitutional remedy for those who have been held under barbaric conditions, without due process, for years—either releasing them or giving them a speedy trial in a civilian court, with all of the accompanying legal protections and guarantees. There has been a great deal of speculation that the administration may support the establishment of a special National Security Court within the civilian court system to try Guantánamo prisoners and other alleged terrorists. This would represent yet another attack on civil liberties, setting up a drumhead court system to railroad those charged with terrorism—something that could in future be used to repress political opposition.

According to NBC Nightly News on Thursday, the administration is considering keeping some 20 Guantánamo detainees, including the five alleged 9/11 conspirators currently facing military commission trials, imprisoned indefinitely without charges in a military brig within the US.

Commentators have noted that the Obama administration wants to prevent noncitizens detained as terrorists from being able to exercise habeas corpus rights.

Two separate measures taken Tuesday and Thursday by Obama point to a further major consideration behind his moves to close Guantánamo and finesse the issue of torture. On Thursday the administration requested a stay in the habeas corpus appeal to the Supreme Court by the only alleged enemy combatant now held on US soil—Ali al-Marri, of Qatar, whom Obama has called “dangerous.” Al-Marri’s lawyers are challenging the right of the president to arrest and jail individuals by declaring them enemy combatants, and it was expected that the Supreme Court’s hearing of the appeal would force Obama to reveal his position on the issue.

This followed Tuesday’s request for a stay from the Federal District Court in Washington in similar appeals that could affect the cases of more than 200 Guantánamo prisoners.

Thus, the immediate effect of the new administration’s moves is to halt civilian trials that could prove immensely damaging to the government by revealing systematic torture of the detainees and could potentially entangle high government officials.

British Parliament member George Galloway appears Tuesday before a Senate panel.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- British Member of Parliament George Galloway angrily denied Tuesday that he profited from Saddam Hussein's regime and criticized a Senate panel probing alleged corruption in the U.N. oil-for-food program in Iraq.

Galloway, an outspoken critic of the war in Iraq, called the panel's investigation the "mother of all smokescreens" used to divert attention from the "pack of lies" that led to the 2003 invasion.

"I told the world that Iraq, contrary to your claims, did not have weapons of mass destruction. I told the world, contrary to your claims, that Iraq had no connection to al Qaeda. I told the world, contrary to your claims, that Iraq had no connection to the atrocity on 9/11, 2001," he told the panel's Republican chairman, Sen. Norm Coleman of Minnesota.

"Senator, in everything I said about Iraq, I turned out to be right and you turned out to be wrong. And 100,000 people have paid with their lives -- 1,600 of them American soldiers sent to their deaths on a pack of lies, 15,000 of them wounded, many of them disabled forever, on a pack of lies."

He added, "Senator, this is the mother of all smokescreens. You are trying to divert attention from the crimes that you supported."

Galloway's appearance Tuesday before the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations of the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee was the first by an official allegedly involved in the scandal.

In a report last week, the subcommittee stated that deposed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein granted Galloway vouchers for 20 million barrels of oil between 2000 and 2003.

He strongly disputed that allegation Tuesday.

"I am not now or ever been an oil trader and neither has anyone on my behalf. I have never seen a barrel of oil, owned one, bought one, sold one, and neither has anybody on my behalf," Galloway testified.

He also said he did not own a company that trades in oil.

"If you had any evidence of that I had ever engaged in any actual oil transaction, if you had any evidence that anybody ever gave me any money, it would be before the public and before this" committee today, Galloway said.

Coleman, a former district attorney, told Galloway before his sworn testimony that "senior Iraqi officials have confirmed that you, in fact, received oil allocations and that the documents that identify you as an allocation recipient are valid."

Galloway challenged that accusation in his opening statement.

"Now, I know that standards have slipped over the last few years in Washington, but for a lawyer, you're remarkably cavalier with any idea of justice," he told Coleman.

Galloway, 51, is a leading critic of British Prime Minister Tony Blair and his alliance with President Bush in the war in Iraq. He was re-elected on an antiwar platform earlier this month.

He said he was "friendly" with former Iraqi Foreign Minister Tariq Aziz and met him many times but that he met with Saddam only twice in his career -- in 1994 and in 2002 -- the last time to persuade Saddam to allow U.N. weapons inspectors into the country.

He said he had met with Saddam "exactly as many times as Donald Rumsfeld has met with him."

"The difference is Donald Rumsfeld met him to sell him guns and give him maps," Galloway said in a heated opening statement.

"I met him to try and bring about an end to sanctions, suffering and war, and on the second occasion, I met him to try and persuade him to allow Hans Blix and U.N. inspectors back into country,"

Rumsfeld visited Baghdad to meet Saddam as President Reagan's Middle East envoy in the 1980s, when the U.S. sided with Iraq in its war with Iran. Blix was chief U.N. weapons inspector in Iraq before the war.

Galloway complained that the panel had determined his guilt without speaking to him.

"You have my name on lists provided to you... by the convicted bank robber and fraudster and con man Ahmed Chalabi, who many people, to their credit, in your country now realize played a decisive role in leading your country into the disaster in Iraq," Galloway told the Senate panel.

Other allegations reportedly came from Iraqi detainees.

"In these circumstances, knowing what the world knows about how you treat prisoners in Abu Ghraib prison, in Bagram Air Base [Afghanistan], in Guantanamo Bay -- including, if I may say, British citizens being held in those places -- I'm not sure how much credibility anyone would put on anything you manage to get from a prisoner in those circumstances," he said.

The Senate subcommittee has alleged in recent days that a number of European politicians were rewarded by Saddam for supporting Iraq's bid to lift economic sanctions imposed after Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990.

The subcommittee report, relying on Iraqi Oil Ministry documents and interviews with detained Saddam loyalists, alleged that Galloway received allocations for 20 million barrels from June 2000 to June 2003 and arranged for two companies, Aredio Petroleum-France and Middle East Advanced Semiconductor Inc., to take delivery of the crude.

Galloway said he never heard of Aredio, but confirmed that the president of Middle East ASI, Jordanian businessman named Fawaz Zureikat, was a good friend and the second-biggest benefactor of a British charity he started called Mariam's Appeal.

Zureikat donated about $600,000. A British probe of the charity "found no impropriety" in fund-raising, Galloway said.

"He may have signed an oil contract. It had nothing to do with me," Galloway said. "I was aware he was doing extensive business with Iraq. I did not know the details of it. It was not my business."

Europeans implicated
In addition to Galloway, the panel also implicated former French Interior Minister Charles Pasqua, who allegedly was allocated 11 million barrels.

"I wrote to Mr. Coleman," Pasqua said Sunday, "and I told him that all allegations about myself are false."

Russian Deputy Parliament Speaker Vladimir Zhirinovsky, who was accused Monday of receiving 76 million barrels of Iraqi crude oil, denied the accusation.

"I've never signed any contract and never received a cent from Iraq," Zhirinovsky told a Russian TV interviewer.

Oil ended up in U.S.
The panels seem to agree that three-quarters of the oil Iraq was permitted to export under oil-for-food ended up in the United States, though U.S. firms directly purchased less than 1 percent of the crude.

A new report from Democrats on the Senate subcommittee concludes the United States ended up with a majority of the oil lifted from Iraq after vendors paid illicit surcharges of 10 cents to 30 cents a barrel to Saddam.

Investigators have estimated Saddam pocketed at least $2 billion by extorting the surcharges and kickbacks on humanitarian goods purchased.

While oil-for-food was operating from 1996 to 2003, Saddam got to choose the buyers of 3.4 billion barrels of oil that sold for $64 billion.

The oil revenue went into a U.N.-controlled bank account that doled out money for U.N.-approved sales of food, medicine and supplies to Iraq.

The illicit surcharges were typically wired into Iraq-controlled bank accounts in Lebanon, Oman and an Iraqi-front company in the United Arab Emirates, or paid in cash to Iraqi embassies and flown to Baghdad.

Of the $228 million in surcharged oil, the Democratic report found the United States imported 525 million barrels, or 52 percent of it.

Among the biggest end users of this oil were Valero, Premcor, Alon USA, and Exxon, according to the report.

Root Cause of this Conflict

The Jews have always said that Arabs and Jews have been fighting for thousands of years and they will continue to fight. This is a MYTH, a Story. It is NOT TRUE.

Arab families have lived in Palestine for almost 2000 years. Ever since the Jews originally and willingly chose to abandon their land - called Judea at the time - when the Romans invaded in 70 CE (70 AD). Thus began the jewish wanderings - called the Diaspora.

For almost 200 years Arabs and Jews have lived in harmoney in the Middle East. In Europe the Jews were discriminated against.

In the late 19th centruy the Zionist Jews started thinking about the Jews going home to Palestine. So they started the idea that Palestine was empty, that noone lived there, that it was a free land for the Jews to settle in. This was NOT true.

At that time there was a thriving Arab community - over half a million Arabs lived in Palestine at the turn of the century (1900). Jews were encouraged to immigrate to Palestine.

The conflict between jews and arabs really began around 1922, and slowly grew as the jewish population grew. The Jews gradually took more and more control of the fertile land and the arab cities. The arabs were forced to move elsewhere. In 1948 the jews announced their independence.

In the American media the offer of 95% was mentioned, BUT NOT the conditions. So when the indifada (resistance against the occupation) broke out, the americans were led to assume that the arabs were just plain greedy and that they were demanding the entire 100% of the land. The American media NEVER mentioned the ongoing control and the checkpoints and the ongoing "prison conditions".

Rubber bullets are NOT made of just rubber. They are steel bullets with a rubber coating. They are just as deadly as an ordinary bullet.

Palestinians in Gaza have been under Military Occupation now for over 38 years.

In 2005 the Israelis dismantled the settlements and relocated the 8000 jewish settlers elsewhere. They said they were "withdrawing" from Gaza. Israel did this ONLY in order to be seen to comply with International law - which says that settlements in an occupied country are illegal. The USA was asked by Israel to PAY for the relocation - some $2 billion extra - to give $227,000 for each settler.

House Demolitions in Gaza are a lot more extensive than in the West Bank. Most Americans do not know about or never read about Rachel Corrie. Her death was given very little mention in the US media.

Rachel Corrie, an American, was killed by an Israeli Army Caterpillar D9 bulldozer in the Gaza Strip on 16 March 2003. Her crime? She was protesting the demolition of a Palestinian house. The Israeli driver claims he did not see her. He just drove right over her and refused to stop.

"Rachel was alone in front of the house as we were trying to get them to stop," he said. "She waved for the bulldozer to stop and waved. She fell down and the bulldozer kept going. We yelled 'stop, stop,' and the bulldozer didn't stop at all. It had completely run over her and then it reversed and ran back over her."

Rachel's skull and rib cage were totally crushed by the US made and Israeli manned bulldozer (which is a US taxpayer's gift to Israel). Rachel was 23 when she died.

There were some IDF soldiers who signed a petition a few years ago to no longer serve in the Occupied Territories. Currently over 1600 Israeli soldiers are refusing to serve in the Occupied Territories. At least 323 have been imprisoned for their refusals. They are called Yesh Gvul.

There are also young high school students who are refusing to report for their compulsory military service. All jewish teenagers must serve in the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) after they graduate from high school. The girls for 2 years and the boys for 3 years. These teengers (shministim) are being jailed by the Israeli government for their refusal to report for duty. Some of them have been jailed several times.

Apologies for this being a long post.

Today is Day 11 of the Israeli occupation of Gaza. Now this blog is supposed to be a domestic blog, but this war will have a huge effect on the Obama and the USA - and possibly the world - if it expands within the Middle East. We may be looking at the beginnings of World War Three.

Now I am not going to say much about this war other than I do oppose the Israeli illegal occupation of Gaza and the West Bank. There are those of you who will tell me that I am wrong to support the Palestinians because they have been shooting rockets over the wall at Israel for the last few years.

Well yes they have, BUT those rockets are very ineffective. Those rockets have killed less than 20 Israeli citizens in the last 5 years. In the last 12 days over 400 Palestinians have been killed. In the last 5 years thousands of Palestinians have been killed and injured.

I posted the following on another blog 8 days ago.

When the World Trade Center was destroyed, Americans did everything they could to protect themselves.

When Spain's transit system was bombed, everyone throughout the world mourned.

When Britain's subways were attacked, the world stood back in shock and measures were taken.
Even Kosevo got protected.
Even Somalia got aid from world organizations.
Even Darfur was not begrudged the right to protect itself.

But after over 60 years of having endured attack after attack after attack after attack, by the Israelis, Palestinians are still being scolded for trying to attempt to defend themselves and they are still being told that they have no right to fight back.

Where's the justice in that?
Where's the international sympathy,
Where's the international help?

New York gets protected, Spain gets sympathy, Britain takes action.

But Palestine? 100 tons of bombs are dropped on the world's most densely-populated city (and region) and they are NOT allowed to fight back. If the people of Gaza dare to protect themselves or to fight back, they will be carpet-bombed, they will be exterminated like fish in a barrel.

This is just NOT RIGHT.

After I posted this, I received an email from a jew who said the following.

Your perception of the events leading up to the current conflict are, in my opinion, incorrect.
Your examination of current events fails to include the last several years of indiscriminate shelling and missile terror that the Palestinians have inflicted on Israel.
Even after Israel unilaterally withdrew from Gaza, the arabs continued to shell and missile Israel.
Even during the Hamas suggested Cease Fire that recently expired the shelling and missile attacks continued daily.
Why is this not worth mentioning ?

At the check points between Gaza and Israel, there are a number of stories of Gaza and West Bank women in labour forced to have the babies on the ground at the checkpoints. Some 34 babies have died in the last few years as well as 5 gaza women who have died at the checkpoints.

If you lost your wife and child at a checkpoint because SOMEONE refused to allow them to pass through to get to a hospital, would you not fight back against that someone? That is why the palestinians continue to fight back.

Emergency U.S. Senate talks on US$14-billion auto aid deal collapse

WASHINGTON - A bailout-weary Congress killed a US$14 billion package to aid struggling U.S. automakers Thursday night after a partisan dispute over union wage cuts derailed a last-ditch effort to revive the emergency aid before year's end.

Republicans, breaking sharply with President George W. Bush as his term draws to a close, refused to back federal aid for Detroit's beleaguered Big Three without a guarantee that the United Auto Workers would agree by the end of next year to wage cuts to bring their pay into line with Japanese carmakers. The UAW refused to do so before its current contract with the automakers expires in 2011.

The breakdown left the fate of the auto industry - and the 3 million jobs it touches - in limbo at a time of growing economic turmoil. General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC have said they could be weeks from collapse. Ford Motor Co. says it does not need federal help now, but its survival is far from certain.

Democratic leaders called on Bush to immediately tap the US$700 billion Wall Street bailout fund for emergency aid to the auto industry, whose fate - along with that of the roughly 3 million jobs it touches - was in limbo.

Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., called the bill's collapse "a loss for the country," adding: "I dread looking at Wall Street tomorrow. It's not going to be a pleasant sight."

GM said in a statement it was "deeply disappointed" that the bipartisan agreement faltered. "We will assess all of our options to continue our restructuring and to obtain the means to weather the current economic crisis," the company said.

There were also reports Friday that the company had hired experts to explore the bankruptcy protection option.

Chrysler said late Thursday that it "will continue to pursue a workable solution to help ensure the future viability of the company."

The White House said it was evaluating its options in light of the breakdown on Capitol Hill.

"It's disappointing that Congress failed to act tonight," Deputy Press Secretary Tony Fratto said in a statement. "We think the legislation we negotiated provided an opportunity to use funds already appropriated for automakers and presented the best chance to avoid a disorderly bankruptcy while ensuring taxpayer funds only go to firms whose stakeholders were prepared to make difficult decisions to become viable."

That bill - the product of a hard-fought negotiation between congressional Democrats and the Bush White House - was virtually dead on arrival in the Senate, where Republicans said it was too weak in its demands on the car companies and contained unacceptable environmental mandates for the Big Three.

Thursday's implosion followed yet another set of marathon negotiations at the Capitol - this time involving labour, the auto industry and lawmakers. The group came close to agreement, but it stalled over the UAW's refusal to agree to the wage concessions.

"We were about three words away from a deal," said Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, the GOP's point man in the negotiations, referring to any date in 2009 on which the UAW would accept wage cuts.

The Senate rejected the bailout 52-35 on a procedural vote - well short of the 60 required - after the talks fell apart. Just 10 Republicans joined 40 Democrats and two independents in backing it. Three Democrats sided with 31 Republicans in opposition. Reid also voted "no" for procedural reasons.

Congress is not scheduled to return for legislative work until early January.

Some Senate Democrats joined Republicans in turning against the House-passed bill - despite increasingly urgent expressions of support from the White House and President-elect Barack Obama for quick action to spare the economy the added pain of a potential automaker collapse.

"In the midst of already deep and troubling economic times, we are about to add to that by walking away," said Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., the Banking Committee chairman who led negotiations on the package.

Alan Reuther, the UAW's legislative director, declined comment to reporters as he left a meeting room during the negotiations. Messages were left with Reuther and UAW spokesman Roger Kerson.

The stunning disintegration was eerily reminiscent of the defeat of the US$700 billion Wall Street bailout in the House, which sent the Dow tumbling and lawmakers back to the drawing board to draft a new agreement to rescue financial institutions and halt a broader economic meltdown. That measure ultimately passed and was signed by Bush.

It wasn't immediately clear, however, how the auto aid measure might be resurrected, with Congress now set to depart for the year.

Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called Senate Republicans' refusal to support the White House-negotiated bill irresponsible and urged the Bush administration and the Federal Reserve to provide short-term relief for the automakers. "That is the only viable option available at this time," she said.

Congressional Republicans have been in open revolt against Bush over the auto bailout. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky joined other GOP lawmakers Thursday in announcing his opposition to the White House-backed bill, which passed the House on Wednesday. He and other Republicans insisted that the carmakers restructure their debt and bring wages and benefits in line with those paid by Toyota, Honda and Nissan in the United States.

Hourly wages for UAW workers at GM factories are about equal to those paid by Toyota Motor Corp. at its older U.S. factories, according to the companies. GM says the average UAW labourer makes US$29.78 per hour, while Toyota says it pays about US$30 per hour. But the unionized factories have far higher benefit costs.

GM says its total hourly labour costs are now US$69, including wages, pensions and health care for active workers, plus the pension and health care costs of more than 432,000 retirees and spouses. Toyota says its total costs are around US$48. The Japanese automaker has far fewer retirees and its pension and health care benefits are not as rich as those paid to UAW workers.

Republicans also bitterly opposed tougher environmental rules carmakers would have to meet as part of the House-passed version of the rescue package, and the Senate dropped them from its plan.

The House-passed bill would have created a Bush-appointed overseer to dole out the money. At the same time, carmakers would have been compelled to return the aid if the "car czar" decided the carmakers hadn't done enough to restructure by spring.

The House approved its plan late Wednesday on a vote of 237-170.

Man in Diabetic Shock Gets Tasered

An Oklahoma driver ended up on the wrong side of a police taser because a medical condition left him helpless.

El Reno police officers approached a vehicle that had spun-out on the interstate. Inside was a man who they thought was drunk or on drugs.

The man was wrestled out of his truck on Interstate 40 because he wasn't cooperating with police. Moments later police tazed the man.

After several attempts officers were finally able to get the combative man into custody. What they don't realize is the 53-year-old wasn't drunk or on drugs. He's was in severe diabetic shock. In fact, his blood sugar level at the time was 11.

Experts say a person suffering from diabetic shock will often show signs or symptoms closely related to somebody who's intoxicated. That can include confusion, aggression, shaking, sweating and disorientation.

"Eleven is pretty low blood sugar and he would not be able to process those commands coming from the officers," explained Dr. Mary Ann Bauman.

Police Chief Ken Brown said his officers had no way of knowing the man who was resisting arrest was in need of medical attention. "His actions, his demeanor, his lack to communicate led the officers to believe he was under the influence of intoxicants or narcotics."

Once police realized what was really happening, they called an ambulance and the man was rushed to the hospital. It was there police finally saw his medical alert necklace hidden under layers of clothing.

"Unfortunately, from the officers' aspect, they feel extremely bad after they learned that it in fact was a medical need and not someone who was under the influence of an intoxicant, drug or alcohol," Brown said.

How can a man in a diabetic coma be combative?
He absolutely would not have resisted.
Nor would he have cooperated.
Because he couldnt do anything.
He was UNCONCIOUS for heavens sake.
He would have been totally relaxed and heavy and unresponsive.
And there would have been NO SMELL of alcohol around him at all.
So it is now ILLEGAL to be UNCONCIOUS around the police.

I am an individual. I will never conform.
So I am teaching my son to not conform as well.

My sons first Grade 1 report card came home this week.
He got all B's and C's - mostly B's - which means he is going ok by the school standards.

I think it is wrong. Reading in grade 1 is scored from level B to level I.
The teacher said my sons reading was at Level E. I disagree.
I think my sons reading level is actually closer to level G or H.
He reads very well at home.
Maybe he doesnt read so good at school. Gee I wonder why?
I'll bet it is because he gets laughed at or made fun of.

Level I (eye not one) is the reading level the kids must reach before the end of grade 1.
Do I know how those levels are measured? No of course not.
Parents are not told these things.
They are kept out of the learning loop.

WHY are the parents being kept out of the learning loop?
How can the parents be told that they must help their kids do their homework on time and help the kids to keep up to grade standards when the parents dont even know what the grade standards are?
WHY?
SO the state can control the kids.

If I were to ask to know the assessment levels, I would be accused of being a terrible parent. I would be told that I was a bad influence on my kid. Heck the school could even call in social services. They have that right to interfere.

By the way - at the bottom of my sons report card is a section called Learning Skills.

Hillary's comments on accepting Sec of State

I am not posting any transcript.

It is my belief that Hillary is a wrong choice in this position for the USA, for Obama and for the world. Hillary has a history of telling lies. (Bosnia under gunfire) and of bending the rules of law (see clinton chronicles - Mena airport, arkansas). She is also vicious, and nasty and I beleive she will create enemies from anyone who does not agree with her or accept her views.

Hillary was very nasty to Obama during the campaign. When she lost the nomination, she demanded to be given the VP (running mate) job and as soon as Obama was elected, she immediately switched to demanding to be given the Secretary of State job.

If she had not been given this position, I beleive that in the senate, she would have done anything she could to undermine Obama's authority as president, possibly even crossing the floor to vote against him - never mind what her constituents wanted.

And to make things even worse - Hillary being given this job goes against the constitution as explained below by Michael Rivero of WRH.

Article One, Section Six of the U.S. Constitution says:

No Senator or Representative shall, during the Time for which he was elected, be appointed to any civil Office under the Authority of the United States which shall have been created, or the Emoluments whereof shall have been increased during such time; and no Person holding any Office under the United States, shall be a Member of either House during his Continuance in Office.

Essentially, you cannot take a job if the salary was increased during your current congressional term. And the salary for cabinet officials has gone up in the past year. Even if it is lowered back down, constitutional scholars say that may not be enough to fix the problem.

The question is whether this would be an issue at confirmation - if Clinton is nominated to the post - and who would raise it. Senators traditionally grant their colleagues some deference and it could be considered politics at its worst if Republicans try to block her nomination with this argument. But senators may be loathe to vote for something scholars tell them is unconstitutional.

But the moment Obama makes the nomination, he violates the Constitution.

Obama is a Constitutional Lawyer. He should already KNOW this.

Good morning. Last week, we announced our economic team, which is working as we speak to craft an Economic Recovery Program to create jobs and grow our struggling economy. Today, Vice President-elect Biden and I are pleased to announce our national security team.

The national security challenges we face are just as grave -- and just as urgent -- as our economic crisis. We are fighting two wars. Old conflicts remain unresolved, and newly assertive powers have put strains on the international system. The spread of nuclear weapons raises the peril that the world’s deadliest technology could fall into dangerous hands. Our dependence on foreign oil empowers authoritarian governments and endangers our planet.

America must also be strong at home to be strong abroad. We need to provide education and opportunity for our citizens, so every American can compete with anyone, anywhere. And our economic power must sustain our military strength, our diplomatic leverage, and our global leadership.

The common thread linking these challenges is the fundamental reality that in the 21st century, our destiny is shared with the world's. From our markets to our security; from our public health to our climate -- we must act with the understanding that, now more than ever, we have a stake in what happens across the globe. And as we learned so painfully on 9/11, terror cannot be contained by borders, nor safety provided by oceans alone.

Last week, we were reminded of this threat once again when terrorists took the lives of six American among nearly 200 victims in Mumbai. In the world we seek, there is no place for those who kill innocent civilians to advance hateful extremism. This weekend, I told Prime Minister Singh that Americans stand with the people of India in this dark time. He earned the respect of members of Congress on both sides of the aisle for his pragmatism and competence. He knows that we need a sustainable national security strategy -- and that includes a bipartisan consensus at home.

As I said throughout the campaign, I will be giving Secretary Gates and our military a new mission as soon as I take office: responsibly ending the war in Iraq through a successful transition to Iraqi control. We will also ensure that we have the strategy -- and resources -- to succeed against al Qaeda and the Taliban. As Bob said not too long ago, Afghanistan is where the war on terror began, and it is where it must end. And going forward, we will continue to make the investments necessary to strengthen our military and increase our ground forces to defeat the threats of the 21st century.

Eric Holder has the talent and commitment to succeed as Attorney General from his first day on the job, which is even more important in a transition that demands vigilance. He has distinguished himself as a prosecutor, a Judge, and a senior official, and he is deeply familiar with the law enforcement challenges we face– from terrorism to counter-intelligence; from white collar crime to public corruption.

Eric also has the combination of toughness and independence that we need at the Justice Department. Let me be clear: the Attorney General serves the American people. And I have every expectation that Eric will protect our people, uphold the public trust, and adhere to our Constitution.

Janet Napolitano offers the experience and executive skill that we need in the next Secretary of Homeland Security. Finally, I am convinced that General James Jones is uniquely suited to be a strong and skilled National Security Advisor. Generations of Joneses have served heroically on the battlefield -- from the beaches of Tarawa in World War II, to Foxtrot Ridge in Vietnam. Jim's Silver Star is a proud part of that legacy. He will bring to the job the dual experience of serving in uniform and as a diplomat. He has commanded a platoon in battle, served as Supreme Allied Commander in a time of war, and worked on behalf of peace in the Middle East.

Jim is focused on the threats of today and the future. He understands the connection between energy and national security, and has worked on the frontlines of global instability – from Kosovo to northern Iraq to Afghanistan. This morning, we met to discuss the situation in Mumbai and some of the challenges that we face in the months and years ahead. In the coming weeks, I will be in close contact with these advisors, who will be working with their counterparts in the Bush Administration to make sure that we are ready to hit the ground running on January 20. Given the range of threats that we face -- and the vulnerability that can be a part of every presidential transition -- I hope that we can proceed swiftly for those national security officials who demand confirmation.

We move forward with the humility that comes with knowing that there are brave men and women protecting us on the front lines. Troops serving their second, third, or fourth tours. Diplomats and intelligence officers in dangerous corners of the world. FBI agents in the field, cops on the beat, prosecutors in our courts, and cargo inspectors at our ports. These selfless Americans whose names are unknown to most of us will form the backbone of our effort. If we serve as well as they do, we will protect our country and promote our values.

And we move forward with respect for America's tradition of a bipartisan national security policy, and a commitment to national unity. When it comes to keeping our nation and our people safe, we are not Republicans and we are not Democrats: we are Americans. There is no monopoly of power or wisdom in either party. Together, as one nation, as one people, we can shape our times instead of being shaped by them. Together, we will meet the challenges of the 21st century not with fear, but with hope.

Waiting in line to buy lunch is a bit much. His time is still worth maybe ~1 million USD a year in terms of the productivity he brings to the economy, even if he declines the paycheck.

Obviously he disagrees. His behavior says that he knows he's no more valuable than his other employees, that without them his company couldn't function, but without him, it'd probably get on just fine. And that is something that US CEO's refuse to accept.

What is disgusting, is when CEOs continue to ramp up their pay while slashing jobs and wages all over a company. They continue to give themselves pay rises, and those of their close lackeys, but make life horrible for those in the lower rungs of the company. THAT is not right. If the company is falling on hard times, it is usually to do with poor leadership, so there is no justifiable reason why they should be getting more money.

Perhaps slashing his salary to such a low level that he is starting to have financial issues himself isn't the best idea, as it may divert his attention from his job of getting the company back on track, but not giving himself pay rises is indeed the right move.

Text of President-elect Barack Obama's FIRST Post Election Press Conference held on November 7th.

OBAMA: Thank you very much, everybody. Thank you very much.

This morning, we woke up to more sobering news about the state of our economy. The 240,000 jobs lost in October marks the 10th consecutive month that our economy has shed jobs. In total, we’ve lost nearly 1.2 million jobs this year, and more than 10 million Americans are now unemployed.

Tens of millions of families are struggling to figure out how to pay the bills and stay in their homes. Their stories are an urgent reminder that we are facing the greatest economic challenge of our lifetime, and we’re going to have to act swiftly to resolve it.

Now, the United States has only one government and one president at a time. And until January 20th of next year, that government is the current administration.

I’ve spoken to President Bush. I appreciate his commitment to ensuring that his economic policy team keeps us fully informed as developments unfold. And I’m also thankful for his invitation to the White House.

Immediately after I become president, I’m going to confront this economic crisis head on by taking all necessary steps to ease the credit crisis, help hardworking families, and restore growth and prosperity.

And this morning, I met with members of my transition economic advisory board, who are standing behind me, alongside my vice president-elect, Joe Biden.

They will help to guide the work of my transition team, working with Rahm Emanuel, my chief of staff, in developing a strong set of policies to respond to this crisis. We discussed in the earlier meeting several of the most immediate challenges facing our economy and key priorities on which to focus in the days and weeks ahead.

First of all, we need a rescue plan for the middle class that invests in immediate efforts to create jobs and provide relief to families that are watching their paychecks shrink and their life savings disappear.

A particularly urgent priority is a further extension of unemployment insurance benefits for workers who cannot find work in the increasingly weak economy.

A fiscal stimulus plan that will jump-start economic growth is long overdue. I’ve talked about it throughout this — the last few months of the campaign. We should get it done.

Second, we have to address the spreading impact of the financial crisis on the other sectors of our economy: small businesses that are struggling to meet their payrolls and finance their holiday inventories; and state and municipal governments facing devastating budget cuts and tax increases.

We must also remember that the financial crisis is increasingly global and requires a global response.

The news coming out of the auto industry this week reminds us of the hardship it faces, hardship that goes far beyond individual auto companies to the countless suppliers, small businesses and communities throughout our nation who depend on a vibrant American auto industry.

The auto industry is the backbone of American manufacturing and a critical part of our attempt to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

I would like to see the administration do everything it can to accelerate the retooling assistance that Congress has already enacted. In addition, I have made it a high priority for my transition team to work on additional policy options to help the auto industry adjust, weather the financial crisis, and succeed in producing fuel-efficient cars here in the United States of America.

And I was glad to be joined today by Governor Jennifer Granholm, who obviously has great knowledge and great interest on this issue.

I’ve asked my team to explore what we can do under current law and whether additional legislation will be needed for this purpose.

Third, we will review the implementation of this administration’s financial program to ensure that the government’s efforts are achieving their central goal of stabilizing financial markets while protecting taxpayers, helping homeowners, and not unduly rewarding the management of financial firms that are receiving government assistance.

It is absolutely critical that the Treasury work closely with the FDIC, HUD, and other government agencies to use the substantial authority that they already have to help families avoid foreclosure and stay in their homes.

Finally, as we monitor and address these immediate economic challenges, we will be moving forward in laying out a set of policies that will grow our middle class and strengthen our economy in the long term. We cannot afford to wait on moving forward on the key priorities that I identified during the campaign, including clean energy, health care, education and tax relief for middle-class families.

My transition team will be working on each of these priorities in the weeks ahead, and I intend to reconvene this advisory board to discuss the best ideas for responding to these immediate problems.

Let me close by saying this. I do not underestimate the enormity of the task that lies ahead. We have taken some major action to date, and we will need further action during this transition and subsequent months.

Some of the choices that we make are going to be difficult. And I have said before and I will repeat again: It is not going to be quick, and it is not going to be easy for us to dig ourselves out of the hole that we are in.

But America is a strong and resilient country. And I know we will succeed, if we put aside partisanship and politics and work together as one nation. That’s what I intend to do.

With that, let me open it up for some questions. And I’m going to start right here with you.

Q: Thank you, Mr. President-elect. I wonder what you think any president can accomplish during their first 100 days in office to turn the economy around? How far can you go? And what will be your priorities on day one?

OBAMA: Well, I think that a new president can do an enormous amount to restore confidence, to move an agenda forward that speaks to the needs of the economy and the needs of middle-class families all across the country.

I’ve outlined during the course of the campaign some critical issues that I intend to work on.

We have a current financial crisis that is spilling out into rest of the economy, and we have taken some action so far. More action is undoubtedly going to be needed. My transition team is going to be monitoring very closely what happens over the course of the next several months.

The one thing I can say with certainty is that we are going to need to see a stimulus package passed either before or after inauguration.

We are going to have to focus on jobs, because the hemorrhaging of jobs has an impact, obviously, on consumer confidence and the ability of people to … buy goods and services and can have enormous spillover effects.

And I think it’s going to be very important for us to provide the kinds of assistance to state and local governments to make sure that they don’t compound some of the problems that are already out there by having to initiate major layoffs or initiate tax increases.

So there are some things that we know we’re going to have to do, but I’m confident that a new president can have an enormous impact. That’s why I ran for president.

Q: (OFF-MIKE) from House Democrats that the stimulus package may be in trouble, that it’s going to be a hard time getting out of a lame-duck session. Are you still confident that you would be able to get something done before you actually take office?

OBAMA: I want to see a stimulus package sooner rather than later. If it does not get done in the lame-duck session, it will be the first thing I get done as president of the United States.

Q: Senator, for the first time since the Iranian revolution, the president of Iran sent a congratulations note to a new U.S. president. I’m wondering if, first of all, if you responded to President (Mahmoud) Ahmadinejad’s note of congratulations and, second of all, and more importantly, how soon do you plan on sending low-level envoys to countries such as Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba, to see if a presidential-level talk would be productive?

OBAMA: I am aware that the letter was sent. Let me state … repeat what I stated during the course of the campaign.

Iran’s development of a nuclear weapon I believe is unacceptable. And we have to mount an international effort to prevent that from happening.

Iran’s support of terrorist organizations I think is something that has to cease.

I will be reviewing the letter from President Ahmadinejad, and we will respond appropriately. It’s only been three days since the election. Obviously, how we approach and deal with a country like Iran is not something that we should, you know, simply do in a knee-jerk fashion. I think we’ve got to think it through.

But I have to reiterate once again that we only have one president at a time. And I want to be very careful that we are sending the right signals to the world as a whole that I am not the president and I won’t be until January 20th.

Q: Picking up what we were just talking about, your meeting with President Bush on Monday. When — he is still the decider, obviously, stating the obvious. When you disagree with decisions he makes, will you defer? Will you challenge? Will you confront? And if it becomes confrontational, could that rattle the markets even more?

OBAMA: Well, President Bush graciously invited Michelle and I to — to meet with him and first lady Laura Bush. We are gratified by the invitation. I’m sure that, in addition to taking a tour of the White House, there’s going to be a substantive conversation between myself and the president.

I’m not going to anticipate problems. I’m going to go in there with a spirit of bipartisanship and a sense that both the president and various leaders in Congress all recognize the severity of the situation right now and want to get stuff done.

And, you know, undoubtedly there may end up being differences between not just members of different parties, but between people within the same party.

The critical point and I think the critical tone that has to be struck by all of us involved right now is the American people need help. This economy is in bad shape. And we have just completed one of the longest election cycles in recorded history.

Now is a good time for us to set politics aside for a while and think practically about what will actually work to move the economy forward. And it’s in that spirit that I’ll have the conversation with the president.

Q: Thank you, Mr. President-elect. With the country facing two wars and a financial crisis, do you think it’s important for you to move especially quickly to fill key cabinet posts, such as treasury secretary and secretary of state?

OBAMA: When we have an announcement about cabinet appointments, we will make them. There is no doubt that I think people want to know who’s going to make up our team.

And I want to move with all deliberate haste, but I want to emphasize deliberate as well as haste. I’m proud of the choice I made of vice president, partly because we did it right. I’m proud of the choice of chief of staff, because we thought it through.

And I think it’s very important, in all these key positions, both in the economic team and the national security team, to … to get it right and not to be so rushed that you end up making mistakes.

I’m confident that we’re going to have an outstanding team, and we will be rolling that out in subsequent weeks.

Q: Yes, sir. To what extent — to what extent are you planning to use your probably pretty great influence in determining the successor for your Senate seat? And what sort of criteria should the governor be looking at in filling that position?

OBAMA: This is the governor’s decision; it is not my decision.

And I think that the criteria that I would have for my successor would be the same criteria that I’d have if I were a voter: somebody who is capable; somebody who is passionate about helping working families in Illinois meet their … meet their dreams.

And I think there are going to be a lot of good choices out there, but it is the governor’s decision to make, not mine.

Q: Mr. President-elect…

OBAMA: What happened to your arm, Lynn?

Q: I cracked my shoulder running to your speech on election night.

OBAMA: Oh, no.

Q: Thank you for asking. Here’s my question. I’m wondering what you’re doing to get ready. Have you spoken to any living ex-presidents, what books you might be reading?

Everyone wants to know, what kind of dog are you going to buy for your girls? Have you decided on a private or public school for your daughters?

OBAMA: Let … let me list those off.

In terms of speaking to former presidents, I’ve spoken to all of them that are living. Obviously, President Clinton — I didn’t want to get into a Nancy Reagan thing about, you know, doing any seances.

I have reread some of Lincoln’s writings, who’s always an extraordinary inspiration.

And, by the way, President Carter, President Bush, Sr., as well as the current president have all been very gracious and offered to provide any help that they can in this transition process.

With respect to the dog, this is a major issue. I think it’s generated more interest on our Web site than just about anything.

We have … we have two criteria that have to be reconciled. One is that Malia is allergic, so it has to be hypoallergenic. There are a number of breeds that are hypoallergenic.

On the other hand, our preference would be to get a shelter dog, but, obviously, a lot of shelter dogs are mutts like me. So … so whether we’re going to be able to balance those two things I think is a pressing issue on the Obama household.

And with respect to schools, Michelle will be — will be scouting out some schools. We’ll be making a decision about that in the future.

Q: You are now privy to a lot of intelligence that you haven’t had access to before, in fact, much of what the president sees, I’m sure all of it.

First of all, do you — what do you think about the state of U.S. intelligence, whether you think it needs beefing up, whether you think there’s enough interaction between the various agencies?

And, second of all, has anything that you’ve heard given you pause about anything you’ve talked about on the campaign trail?

OBAMA: Well, as you know, if … if there was something I had heard, I couldn’t tell you. But…

Q: (OFF-MIKE)

OBAMA: I have received intelligence briefings. And I will make just a general statement: Our intelligence process can always improve. I think it has gotten better. And, you know, beyond that, I don’t think I should comment on the nature of the intelligence briefings. That was a two-parter. Was there another aspect to that?

Q: Well, just whether — you know, absent what you’ve heard…

OBAMA: OK, I get you.

Q: … whether anything has given you pause.

OBAMA: I’m going to skip that.

Q: Mr. President-elect, do you still intend to seek income tax increases for upper-income Americans? And if so, should these Americans expect to pay higher taxes in 2009?

OBAMA: The … my tax plan represented a net tax cut. It provided for substantial middle-class tax cuts; 95 percent of working Americans would receive them.

It also provided for cuts in capital gains for small businesses, additional tax credits. All of it is designed for job growth.

My priority is going to be, how do we grow the economy? How do we create more jobs?

I think that the plan that we’ve put forward is the right one, but, obviously, over the next several weeks and months, we’re going to be continuing to take a look at the data and see what’s taking place in the economy as a whole.

But, understand, the goal of my plan is to provide tax relief to families that are struggling, but also to boost the capacity of the economy to grow from the bottom up.

WASHINGTON - Before he ran for president, Barack Obama quit smoking. Now that he's won the job, he may have to break another addiction: checking his BlackBerry for email.

The president's email can be subpoenaed by Congress and courts and may be subject to public records laws, so if a president doesn't want his e-mail public, he shouldn't email, experts said. And there may be security issues about carrying around trackable cellphones.

Obama transition officials haven't made a decision on what the new president will or will not carry but those who have been there say it's unlikely he'll carry his BlackBerry and he may be in for some withdrawal pains.

"Definitely he's going to feel an electronic detoxing," said Reed Dickens, former assistant press secretary to President George W. Bush. Dickens jokes he is so addicted to his BlackBerry he checks his device before opening his right eye.

Obama has often been seen avidly checking his email on his hand-held equipment. This past summer, news cameras recorded him checking his BlackBerry while watching his daughter's soccer game, only to have Michelle Obama slap at his hands, prompting him to return the device to its holster.

Actress Scarlett Johansson said she has had frequent email exchanges with him during his campaign travels, something the Obama campaign downplayed.

"This is a decision president-elect Obama will have to face," said former Bush press secretary Scott McClellan, who added Obama's legal advisers will probably recommend against an emailing president.

"While he has pledged an open and transparent government, I doubt the president-elect is interested in subjecting his own personal communications to that standard," McClellan wrote in an email interview. He added: "He will have to think very hard about whether he wants to make his own words that subject to open records by having his own email and his own BlackBerry."

There is presidential precedent for an email blackout. Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton didn't email while in office.

"It's all discoverable; it creates a trail that might end up in congressional investigators' hands," said Clinton press secretary Mike McCurry.

If you want to delete White House email, you get a stern warning about archiving presidential records, he said.

A few days before Bush took office in 2001, he sent an email to a few dozen close friends saying he would no longer use email: "Since I do not want my private conversations looked at by those out to embarrass, the only course of action is not to correspond in cyberspace. This saddens me."

Bush was unhappy about losing his email and mostly used the phone to talk with friends, McClellan wrote, adding: "I am sure the president looks forward to being able to communicate with them via email again come Jan. 20, 2009."

The Bush White House has been battling courts about lapses in email archives at the White House.

Before 2001, Bush was an active emailer but that was before the now ubiquitous BlackBerry with email and text-message functions was released in 2002. Users who constantly check their devices often call themselves crackberry addicts. A Canadian government agency asked its workers to live by a "BlackBerry blackout" on nights and weekends "in order to achieve work/life quality here."

"I think Obama is the first president who is addicted to the BlackBerry like the rest of us and there's a lot of presidential records and archive rules on what gets stored and what doesn't," said former Clinton press secretary Joe Lockhart.

Quitting BlackBerry use is not something some political types - such as McClellan - or tech-geeks like thinking about. Benjamin Nugent, author of the book "American Nerd," said the president-elect is such a techie and has nerd qualities. So cutting off the BlackBerry could be painful. It'll be interesting if we could see the torment on his face. For me it would be hell."

But it actually could be good for the president-elect, said psychology professor Lawrence Welkowitz of Keene State University in New Hampshire. "It might be a completely freeing thing for him, so that he can free himself to think and act," said Welkowitz, who doesn't carry a BlackBerry.

But even if Obama isn't packing a BlackBerry or cellphone, he'll have plenty of aides within arm's reach who do, experts said. Often a president uses the equipment of personal assistants.

And there is the chance Obama may buck the past and keep his BlackBerry tethered to his belt.

"He's the president," McCurry said. "If he wants to carry the BlackBerry, he's entitled."

Well yesterday the people spoke in a resoundingly LOUD voice. They want the situation to CHANGE.

So this blog will now follow Barack Obama and Joe Biden as we see how they deal with the USA, the world, the wars, the financial crisis and the Middle East.

I think we all know that they will be diplomatic.

A Landslide Win for Obama

According to MY local paper, Obama has ended up with almost 350 electoral votes. He only needed 270 to win. So he has been handed a DECISIVE vistory. The Republicans cannot steal it and the Electoral College CANNOT change their votes. Well, actually they can.

It turns out there is no federal law that requires an elector to vote according to their pledge (to their respective party). And so, more than a few electors have cast their votes without following the popular vote or their party. These electors are called "faithless electors."

In response to these faithless electors' actions, several states have created laws to enforce an elector's pledge to his or her party vote or the popular vote. Some states even go the extra step to assess a misdemeanor charge and a fine to such actions.

But not this year. NOT in 2008. This year the Electoral College MUST go with what the people voted. They have no choice. If they do vote for McCain - there will be riots in the streets.

SOMETIMES when Barack Obama waited outside a restaurant for the valet to bring his car, a white couple would toss him their car keys. He endured this and all the petty humiliations of the black man in America.

Yet he never allowed his anger to take over and he never surrendered to the tightly boxed confines of racial expectations. He was always determined to break what he calls "the psychological shackles of slavery and Jim Crow [segregation]".

And he and his wife try to protect their two young daughters from being snared by the lingering culture of post-slavery despair: "Michelle and I must be continually vigilant against some of the debilitating story lines that our daughters may absorb," he writes, "about who the world thinks they are, and what the world imagines they should be."

Before African Americans could persuade whites that they could hold high office, they have had to convince themselves first.

But what's Obama's secret? He goes to today's US election as the favourite to become the most powerful man in the world. How did he resist the mindset of racial limitations that has bound generations of African-Americans for the 143 years since the abolition of slavery?

As with Colin Powell, until now the black man who ascended higher than any other in America, Obama's family came from outside mainstream African-American society and never fully joined.

Asked the secret of his success, Powell, the former chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff and secretary of state, emphasised that his parents were immigrants from Jamaica.

The British ended slavery in the Caribbean more than a generation before the Americans got around to it and they set up compulsory schooling and allowed blacks to work in the civil service.

As a result, Powell said, Jamaicans had "an opportunity to develop attitudes of independence, self-responsibility and self-worth. They did not have their individual dignity beaten down for 300 years, the fate of so many black American slaves and their descendants."

Similarly, Obama's parents were not part of the African-American experience. Obama's father, an immigrant from Kenya, was a senior government economist who left his wife and two-year-old son in Hawaii to study at Harvard University.

His mother, white and from the mid-western US state of Kansas, was an independent-minded woman who earned a PhD in anthropology. She worked in rural development in Indonesia, where she married her second husband, an Indonesian geologist who ended up as a public relations consultant for the US oil company Mobil.

As Obama has said: "My own upbringing hardly typifies the African-American experience."

Colin Powell remarked that one of the reasons he was able to progress to the very highest post in the US Armed Forces was that "I speak reasonably well, like a white person".

Likewise, Barack Obama, as a student one of the most brilliant young lawyers of his generation at Harvard, has perfect grammar, an urbane accent and only ever play-acts at speaking like a working class African American.

As he told a rally this week as he criticised a policy of his rival, John McCain: "That ain't right," echoing a Chris Rock movie character, an accidental know-nothing presidential candidate in the film Head Of State. Another vital aspect of the success of Powell and Obama is that they are not threatening.

Powell's cousin, Bruce Llewellyn, chairman of the Philadelphia Coca-Coca Bottling Company and the richest black man in the US, contrasted Powell with Jesse Jackson: "Jesse scares white people, because he really sounds like a fiery zealot, like he might just jump up and say, 'F--- you!' and hit you in the mouth."

As Powell himself put it: "I don't shove it in their face, you know? I don't bring any stereotypes or threatening visage to their presence. Some black people do."

Obama's calm and measured manner reassures white audiences, though some remain apprehensive. As Francis Fukuyama, professor of international political economy at Johns Hopkins University, explained it: "Obama's been very careful to distance himself from the traditional Jesse Jackson agenda and the Jesse Jackson persona. A lot of people are worried about voting for him because they think once he's elected the mask will fall off and there'll be an angry Jesse Jackson underneath."

But Obama doesn't carry the anger that many African Americans bear as part of their harsh historical experience. That's because he does not come from that experience.

When American commentators call him a "post-racial" candidate, what they are really observing is that he is a post-slave culture candidate. Obama has talked about the African Americans' tendency to protect themselves psychologically by assuming the worst: "I've had some blacks tell me, 'We've been trying for 300 years, and it hasn't worked yet."'

Obama, unburdened by the brutal history of the American negro, instead assumes the best. He has persuaded millions of other Americans, of all colours, that the best is within reach.

You rose above the nasty partisan politics that have infected this country for so long now and lifted this nation up from the nightmare of the past eight years. The country has put their faith in you and now the real hard work begins. You will have a majority in both houses to assist you, so the road could be considerably easier at least for the first two years. The amount of the vote seems to indicate that even your enemies cannot use the silly “no mandate” mantra. Things have aligned themselves for you well.

Do not lose sight of why so many were dissatisfied though. It is not a repudiation of traditional republicanism or conservatism. It was a resounding “no more” to the neo-con vision for America. That is what you must seek to undo as your presidency unfolds.

For starters, you need to fix the election process in this country. You need to repeal that horrific HAVA; which turned over so much power to companies that are corrupt. You need to declare Election Day a national holiday, and strip the power from individual states to manipulate their elections. You need to make voting more accessible, not less. We need to get rid of caging lists and partisan vote challenges. Make no mistake about it Mr. Obama; they tried to steal it from you as they had Kerry and Gore. There was simply too much of a wave to overcome. If HAVA and elections are not straightened out by the time your first term is up, then the problems will still remain. Integrity must be restored to our electoral process. Complete open elections. Source codes revealed, exit polling data should be public domain. It remains a crucial problem that needs to be immediately addressed.

Secondly, we need to restore accountability to the government. The era of deregulation must end and end now. Starting with the media. Media consolidation has allowed fiction to be presented as fact and has skewed the reality in this country for far too long. If you do not have a fair media, as well as elections, then this country will always be able to be hijacked by ideologues as it has been for a decade now. And do not stop there. Regulation and transparency in government needs to continue in the financial markets, housing industry and any other area that has been gutted by the Bush Neo-Con cabal.

Thirdly, it is time to bring our kids home with the honor they have earned. It is time to start worrying about THIS country. It is time to develop the infrastructure of THIS country. It is time to focus on education, jobs and strengthening our currency before we hit a financial 9-11. It is time to stop blowing countries up randomly and hiding behind some veiled “terror” nonsense. Along with this Mr. Obama, it is time to restore our standing in the world. It is time to end Gitmo and torture as a national policy. This country has forfeited its decency in exchange for a false sense of security. Along with all of this also must be a restoration of our precious civil liberties. It is time to end the police state this country is turning into. You were a Constitutional Law Professor for long enough to respect the guiding document of this nation. It is time to take the shackles off of the American people. It is time for “free speech zones” to mean the entire United States of America.

Lastly, President-Elect Obama, it is time to re-balance the government. It is time to end the theory of a unitary executive. It is time to outlaw signing statements where a president thinks he is above the law. And here is the really hard part Mr. Obama. You cannot truly move on without addressing what happened. This is not about revenge it is about justice. The Bush Administration needs to be held accountable for violations against the American people and the constitution, period. If you choose to move on without doing this, you do so at the peril of every American. You will end up condoning illegal activities committed by presidents. If this president lied this country into a war that has killed hundreds of thousands of people, he must be held accountable. If not, it gives free reign for future presidents to abuse their power as it appears Bush has done. We must once again prove to the world that no one in this country is above the law, least of all the chief law enforcement officer, who so disrespected the laws of this country that he signed over 800 signing statements saying he would not adhere to the laws he signed. That hypocrisy must end and be held to account.

Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “If you lose hope, somehow you lose the vitality that keeps life moving, you lose that courage to be, that quality that helps you go on in spite of it all. And so today I still have a dream.” We had almost lost that hope over the past eight years. The hope that all that could be right about America could be restored. The hope that dreams were still worth holding onto. I do not know if Barack Obama can fix everything. I do not know if he is the answer to all that ails this great nation. What I do know is that for this moment in time, for this glimmer in the pages of history, hope has been restored and dreams seem just a bit more possible.

A Metro-Detroit Michigan woman refused to give candy on Halloween to children of Barack Obama supporters.

Shirley Nagel of Grosse Pointe Farms gave out treats Friday evening, but only to those who share her support of John McCain and running mate Sarah Palin.

Fox 2 News reports a sign posted outside Nagel's house, about 12 miles west of Detroit, served notice to all trick-or-treaters. It read: "No handouts for Obama supporters, liars, tricksters or kids of supporters."

Nagel told a Fox 2 reporter that "Obama's scary." When asked about children who'd been turned away empty-handed and crying, she said: "Oh well. Everybody has a choice."

The neighbour of Shirley Nagel put a sign up on his gate that said Obama 4 Peace (actually showing the peace sign) and he gave out candy to ALL the kids.

Radio Comedy Duo called the Masked Avengers from Montreal.

MONTREAL - In an over-the-top accent, one half of a notorious Quebec comedy duo claims to be the president of France as he describes sex with his famous wife, the joy of killing animals and Hustler magazine's latest Sarah Palin porno spoof.

At the other end of the line? An oblivious Sarah Palin.

The Masked Avengers, a radio pairing notorious for prank calls to celebrities and heads of state, notched its latest victory Saturday when it released a recording of a six-minute call with Palin, who thought she was talking with Nicolas Sarkozy.

Throughout the call, which was making the rounds in U.S. political circles by day's end Saturday, Palin and the pranksters discuss politics, pundits, and the perils of going hunting with Vice-President Dick Cheney.

"We have such great respect for you, John McCain and I, we love you," Palin gushes, evidently unaware she's speaking to an infamous Quebec comedian named Marc-Antoine Audette.

At one point, Palin even comes close to confirming her intention to one day run for president, when Audette slyly remarks he can see her taking over the big desk in the Oval office.

"Maybe in eight years," she replies with a nervous chuckle.

Over the course of the interview, Palin doesn't seem to realize she's being tricked until Audette comes clean near the end of the call.

"Ohhhh . . . have we been pranked?" she says, in her inimitable style. Seconds later, Palin's aide can be heard taking the phone before the line goes dead.

Throughout the conversation, Audette drops plenty of clues that something's amiss.

He identifies French singer and actor Johnny Hallyday as his special adviser to the U.S., singer Stef Carse as Canada's prime minister and Quebec comedian and radio host Richard Z. Sirois as the provincial premier.

"We should go hunting together," Palin offers when Audette professes a love of hunting - or, more precisely, killing animals. "We can have a lot of fun together while we're getting work done. We could kill two birds with one stone."

Audette then jokes that they shouldn't bring Cheney on the hunt, referring to the 2006 incident in which the vice-president shot and injured a friend while hunting quail.

"I'll be a careful shot," responds Palin, who praises Sarkozy throughout the call.

"I look forward to working with you and getting to meet you personally - and your beautiful wife, oh my goodness," she says.

"You've added a lot of energy to your country with that beautiful family of yours."

Audette then tells her his wife, Carla Bruni, a singer and former model, was jealous to hear Sarkozy would be speaking to Palin. "Give her a big hug for me," Palin responds.

Audette goes on to describe Bruni as "hot in bed" and claims she's written a song for Palin, the French title of which translates as "Lipstick on a Pig." In English, Audette says the song is about Joe the Plumber.

Finally, he mentions a notorious Hustler video titled "Nailin' Paylin," describing it as "the documentary they made on your life."

"Oh, good, thank you, yes," Palin replies.

"That was really edgy," Audette says.

"Well, good."

In an interview Saturday, Audette told The Canadian Press it wasn't easy setting up the interview with Republican presidential candidate John McCain's running mate, and described the accomplishment as the pair's biggest triumph to date.

"It really took a lot of work," he said.

"We had to go through the Secret Service, the people in her entourage. It's the biggest coup so far. We're proud to add (this prank) to our top hits."

It took the pair, known for securing surreptitious interviews with celebrities, politicians and heads of state, five days to set up the call, Audette said. The secret to getting powerful people on the line? Time and persistence.

"I wanted to see how (Palin) was on an intellectual level," Audette said, comparing the latest prank to the duo's crank call with pop idol Britney Spears.

"You can see that she's, well, not really brilliant."

In a statement Saturday, Palin's team said the vice-presidential nominee was "mildly amused" to learn she was the victim of a prank.

"Gov. Palin was mildly amused to learn that she had joined the ranks of heads of state, including President Sarkozy, and other celebrities in being targeted by these pranksters," said spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt.

"C'est la vie."

Audette, too, was contrite afterward.

"I hope we won't have a one-way ticket to Guantanamo Bay."

The well-known radio prankster duo of Audette and Sebastien Trudel have most recently tricked Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger. Other celebrity victims include Spears and Bill Gates.

In 2007, they conned Sarkozy himself by impersonating Prime Minister Stephen Harper. And their 2006 call to former French president Jacques Chirac was rated by the BBC as one of the top 30 all-time best moments in radio history.

Known as the "Masked Avengers," they've been popular on the Quebec comedy scene for a decade.

3) While I see your points for having everyone access to a weapon for self defense (police after all are useless for protection), I see the sheer obsession with guns, and you americans have to ask yourself, If you need access to a military assault rifle for defense, you are living in one screwed up country! If you just THINK you do, then you are paranoid to the extreme. All other reasons for the gun are to attack, which is psychotic. So which it is gun nuts, are you paranoid, psychotic, or just have no faith in your own fellow Americans? Really now, a simpler weapon would be enough.

4) Seems the problems in your culture are always solved through violence and guns, even on a local neighbourhood level. You encourage everyone to be armed and to just start shooting whenever required. Diplomacy, peaceful solutions, they are always secondary first reaction is to reach for the gun. Your culture jokes about it (the redneck on the porch with the shotgun), the troopers and border agents always hand on the gun even in a traffic stop, always insisting that everyone needs the right to bear arms, etc. So WHY is it so shocking when you see your countries leaders starting wars indiscriminately with shoot first politics, and WHY is it so shocking when you see school shootings, and WHY is it so shocking when other countries are trying to get nuclear arms (big guns on an international scale) when your own culture can't shut up about how important it is??? Tuchman went up to the part of Alaska from which you can actually see Russia, a remote island called Little Diomede located just 2.4 miles from its Russian twin, Big Diomede.

It turns out Gary Tuchman's trip to Little Diomede sets him apart from Sarah Palin -- because she's never actually been there, nor has she set eyes on its neighbor in Russia.

Tuchman says that only 150 people live on Little Diomede, and that the town of Diomede has no streets and no cars. The poverty rate is over 40%, there is no television, and the only practical way to reach it is by helicopter. Anchorage (near Palin's hometown) is 550 miles away.

No Alaskan governor has ever visited Little Diomede, though indicted U.S. Senator Ted Stevens has made the trip. The town's residents barely knew who Palin was, and one of them didn't know she was the VP nominee.

Joe the Plumber says an Obama vote means death to Israel

The all-out effort from John McCain's presidential campaign to scare voters into backing the Republican candidate continued apace on Tuesday as McCain surrogate Joe the Plumber agreed that a Barack Obama presidency would mean the "death of Israel" and end democracy in America.

The Ohio plumber, who has no license and is actually named Samuel Wurzelbacher, spoke at a McCain campaign event in Columbus Monday. A McCain supporter asked if "a vote for Obama is a vote for the death of Israel." JTP hardly batted an eye.

"I'll go ahead and agree with you on that," Wurzelbacher said.

The push-back against Wurzelbacher's comments began, somewhat unexpectedly, at Fox News.

The network noted that the McCain campaign seemed hesitant to distance itself from Wurzelbacher. Correspondent Carl Cameron said that the McCain campaign was going to put out an ad today criticizing Obama policies on Israel.

"Just a coincidence?" he asked. "We report you decide."

Later Tuesday afternoon, Shepard Smith pressed Wurzelbacher on his comments, reminding the woefully misinformed McCain backer that Obama has consistently voiced support for Israel. Pressed several times to explain how he could agree with the conclusion that Obama would lead to the death of the Jewish state, Wurzelbacher was unable to come up with any good reasons aside from Obama's position in favor of negotiating with rogue regimes such as Iran.

"You don't want my opinion on foreign policy," Wurzelbacher said. "I know just enough to kind of be dangerous."

Smith seemed to agree with that assessment, implying that the only source for Wurzelbacher and the supporter's concern was "hateful things spread on the Internet." The host clearly worried that Wurzelbacher's endorsement of such a view might inspire violence against the candidate.

Why, Smith asked, would Wurzelbacher believe Obama was lying when he spoke of the importance of Israel's relationship with the United States.

Wurzelbacher was flummoxed. All he could offer was an appeal for people to "go out and find their own reasons ... go out and get informed."

If only the "plumber" had bothered to take his own advice before jumping onto the national stage. Smith, for his part, made sure to set his audience straight on the facts.

"I just want to make this 100 percent perfectly clear, Barack Obama has said repeatedly and demonstrated repeatedly that Israel will always be a friend of the United States, no matter what happens once he becomes President of the United States, his words," Smith said after the interview ended. "The rest of it, man, it just gets frightening sometimes."

In Ohio, Wurzelbacher went on to reiterate McCain's attempts to paint Obama as a socialist, The Associated Press reports.

"I'm honestly scared for America," Wurzelbacher said.

He later said Obama would end the democracy that the U.S. military had defended during wars.

"I love America. I hope it remains a democracy, not a socialist society. ... If you look at spreading the wealth, that's honestly right out of Karl Marx's mouth," Wurzelbacher said.

"No one can debate that. That's not my opinion. That's fact."
McCain's campaign has used the "spread the wealth" line to attack Obama ever since the Democratic candidate used it to inartfully describe his tax proposals.

The attempts to compare Obama's relatively modest restructuring of the progressive tax system to Marxism strikes most reasonable observers as patently absurd, but the attack seems to be all the foundering McCain campaign has left. Obama's proposal would raise the tax rate on income above $250,000 from 36 to 39 percent and lower taxes for middle-class Americans.

McCain's campaign also has heavily courted Jewish voters, who will be a crucial voting bloc in Florida and other swing states.

Wurzelbacher's agreement that Obama would portend the death of Israel, though, seems to go beyond rhetoric the McCain campaign has employed so far. Until Tuesday, that kind of fear-mongering was mostly limited to right-wing blogs.

The McCain campaign said Wurzelbacher and the supporter's views were there own regarding Israel, but they did not forcefully repudiate the attack, Fox News's Carl Cameron reported just after the rally.

A Republican National Committee spokesman later gave Fox a longer statement that largely skirted the issue.

"While he's clearly his own man, so far Joe has offered some penetrating and clear analysis that cuts to the core of many of the concerns that people have with Barack Obama's statements and policies," RNC spokesman Jeff Sadosky said. "Whether it is Obama's willingness to sit down unconditionally with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, or his plans to redistribute the paychecks of hardworking Americans, there is good reason to question the judgment that Obama would bring to the Oval Office."

Cameron noted the statement "doesn't say whether or not McCain agrees" with Wurzelbacher and the supporter and said McCain "won't go too far" to distance himself from the man who's become a campaign centerpiece.

If there's one thing both the McCain and Obama campaigns agree on it's that the election will be close in Florida. The McCain campaign says it has more volunteers than the Democrats and that ultimately gives them the edge. McCain's Central Florida Campaign Manger says ACORN and the Democrats have to rely on paid workers.

However, the McCain campaign is hiring paid workers who sometimes also call themselves volunteers. The UpTake's Sam Mayfield talked to a few of them... and that's when one McCain campaign worker decided you shouldn't see what is going on and threatened to have her arrested.

Mccain was born in Panama in 1936 but he was NOT made a US citizen until congress passed a law in 1937. (a military base is NOT US soil).

So guess what happened in April this year?
Congress passed a resolution.
S.RES.511 Title: A resolution recognizing that John Sidney McCain, III, is a natural born citizen. Latest Major Action: 4/30/2008 Passed/agreed to in Senate. Status: Resolution agreed to in Senate without amendment and with a preamble by Unanimous Consent.

If Congress has to make it legal - then he was not a natural born citizen in the first place - so he is NOT eligible.

One other thing - about Military bases -
"7 FAM 1116.1-4 Not Included in the Meaning of "In the United States" (TL:CON-64; 11-30-95)

...c. Despite widespread popular belief, U.S. military installations abroad and U.S. diplomatic or consular facilities are not part of the United States within the meaning of the 14th Amendment. A child born on the premises of such a facility is not subject to the jurisdiction of the United States and does NOT acquire U.S. citizenship."

US military bases, consulates and embassies are NOT US soil. How interesting.
Therefore any child born in one of the above facilities is ONLY a US citizen if his parents are US citizens.
The law says nothing about being a natural born citizen.

It's an interesting question as to whether the 1790 law still applies in light of the fact that U.S. nationality law is now solely within the purview of the Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C) Act of June 27, 1952, As Amended.

Unfortunately, the 1790 "law" is not law today. The USC 1401 defines a "citizen . . . at birth." As far as I can tell, the old 1790 statute is just that, an old statute, no longer law. The current statute does not define "natural born citizen." Congress may not have the power to define that term.

The requirements for the Presidency are that the candidate be a "Natural Born" citizen. The grey area for McCain is that he was born of two American parents, which makes him automatically an American citizen, but he was born outside the United States, so his citizenzhip is technical, not Natural Born.
Congress did pass a law making births in the Canal Zone legally equivelant to being born inside the United States (1937), but that law was passed after McCain's birth, therefore it does not apply. The Senate, via a "Sense of the Senate" bill (see S.RES.511 above) declared McCain a natural born citizen by fiat. Just how much weight that would have if McCain's citizenship ever wound up before the US Supreme Court is open to debate, but if McCain loses the election and tries to challenge on the basis of claims that Obama is not a natural-born citizen, then McCain's own grey birth will come back to haunt him and we might wind up with Ron Paul after all! :)

In Laredo Texas, this violation of our rights is a way of life. Post 9/11, the questioning has gotten more invasive even after citizenship has been established and Fido hasn't alerted to anything illegal. But is immigration enforcement the true mission of the CBP? Apparently not, according to Carlos X. Carrillo, the BP chief in Laredo. The words straight from his mouth are:

"The Border Patrol's job is not to stop illegal immigrants.
The Border Patrol's job is not to stop narcotics.
The Border Patrol's mission is not to stop criminals.
The Border Patrol's mission is to stop terrorists and terrorist weapons from entering the country."

You’re driving along a remote, dusty road, when suddenly you come upon a border patrol checkpoint. There, agents demand to see your identity papers, and search your car. You are taken by surprise, because you know you haven’t wandered across the Texas-Mexico border. In fact, you’re quite sure of that, because you’re driving through rural Wisconsin countryside west of Green Bay. Even the Canadian border is more than 90 miles away.

This scene is not as far-fetched as you might want to believe. The government is turning vast swaths of our country into a “Constitution-Free Zone” in which U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is allowed to exercise extraordinary authority that would not normally be permitted under the Constitution. The government says that “the border” — where there is a longstanding view that the Constitution does not fully apply — actually stretches 100 miles inland from the nation’s “external boundary.” And increasingly, we are seeing DHS vigorously utilize that authority.

Today (23 Oct 2008) we held a press conference at the National Press Club here in D.C. to try to draw attention to this problem — and the fact that, as we showed, nearly two-thirds of the U.S. population live within this “Constitution-Free Zone.” That’s 197.4 million people.

We calculated this using the most recent, 2007 numbers from the U.S. Census, and released a map showing the cities and states that are enveloped by this zone.

It includes some of the largest metropolitan areas in the country: New York City, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles and Portland, Oregon. States that are completely within this Constitution-Free Zone include Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and Rhode Island. When you say “border,” they think “all of New England.”

CBP has been setting up checkpoints far inland — on highways in states such as California, Texas and Arizona, and at ferry terminals in Washington State. Typically, the agents ask drivers and passengers about their citizenship. People are also reporting that even after they provide passports or state driver’s licenses, CBP continues to interrogate them and try to pressure them into permitting a search.

At our press conference today in the National Press Club here in DC, two U.S. citizens described their experiences with CBP.

Vince Peppard, a retired social worker, told of being stopped and harassed by the border authorities at least 15 miles from the Mexico border with his wife, Berlant. [She is from Syria and this is the letter of complaint that Vince wrote after the incident]

Craig Johnson, a music professor at a San Diego college, told how he participated in a peaceful demonstration near the border to protest against the destruction of a state park so that a fence could be constructed along the U.S. border. CBP agents monitored the protest and collected the license plate information of those who participated. Since this protest, Mr. Johnson has twice crossed the US-Mexico border and, each time, he has been pulled aside for additional screening. He was taken to another room, handcuffed and questioned. On his first crossing, he was also partially stripped and subjected to a body cavity search. A CBP agent also told Mr. Johnson that he was on an “armed and dangerous” list. Before the protest, Mr. Johnson crossed the US-Mexico border numerous times without incident. It is difficult to believe that his subsequent harassment at the border is unrelated to his protest activity. If it is related, that would constitute a significant abuse.

Congress needs to hold hearings to investigate these egregious violations of Americans’ civil liberties, and then pass new laws protecting Americans’ rights.

I guarantee you that if these powers are not challenged, if the American people do not push back, sooner or later a factory worker in southern New Hampshire, a farmer in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, or yes, some guy driving across rural Wisconsin, will wake up to find that they have lost their right to go about their business, and travel around inside their own country, without interference from the authorities.

In a string of interviews and in the much-hyped vice-presidential debate, Sarah Palin has perfected the art of palinizing. The tactic is a painfully transparent political filibuster of sorts. When Palin is presented with a question she either does not understand or that she does not want to answer truthfully, she opens her mouth and out pours a waterfall of GOP buzzwords, cascading haphazardly from her lips and leaving listeners drenched in the horrific realization that this small-town mayor turned newbie governor from Alaska is, quite simply, both an idiot and a liar.

Palinizing is above all the art of distraction, with the goal of diverting attention away from a fault (in Palins case, ignorance) and towards the glittering veneer of hollow talking points which dazzle but do nothing in terms of answering the question presented. For Palins most ardent fans, the evasiveness is perceived as a much-deserved slap in the face to the "mainstream" media. For her detractors and even those who are ambivalent towards her, Palins verbal hopscotch is infuriating.

At the debate, Palin was in full form, so much so that she brazenly told moderator Gwen Ifill that no, she was not going to answer the question posed. She then proceeded to read from her notecards the attack scripted by the hands of another—that Barack Obama was a dangerous liberal, or that he would raise the "white flag of surrender." This weeks SNL parody, painfully mirroring truth, had Tina Fey telling moderator Queen Latifah that, "no thank you," she would "ignore" the questions and talk about what she wanted to talk about instead.

On the other side of the stage, Joe Biden delivered attacks of his own. But the quality of his attacks were, as so much was that night, much different in style and substance than those of his opponent. In answering the questions posed—and yes, Biden did answer them--he unleashed on McCain, methodically dissecting the "maverick" myth and thrashing McCains policy proposals. He frequently praised McCains personal character—so much so that that in itself became a subject of parody on Saturday Night Live.

Bidens attacks were advocacy-oriented, which Palins were adversary-oriented. When Biden lashed out, even when referencing McCain, he did so for or against policy proposals and political philosophies. When Palin lashed out, she lashed out at Obama or Biden, as individuals.

In other words, when Biden attacked, one felt as if he was speaking on behalf of a middle class full of indignation at the status quo. When Palin attacked, one felt as if she was speaking on behalf of herself, and John McCain, the "team of mavericks."..She meandered around a field of GOP buzzwords until she stumbled upon a clearing where she could squeeze in one of the assembled attacks on her cards. It was fierce Republican politics. It was farce.

Fast forward to the weekend after the debate. It has become clear that Palins Cliff Notes performance was neither enough to salvage her reputation among the general electorate nor enough to rescue McCains ailing presidential campaign. Just as Palin was when asked the most basic of questions what do you read, what Supreme Court case do you disagree with, what is your view on the Bush Doctrine — the McCain camp is cornered. And just as the vice-presidential nominee has done time and time again, the McCain campaign is palinizing.

The American people are asking of the candidates a serious question: how will you put our country back on track? Rather than provide a direct answer, the McCain campaign has exhibited a wholesale embrace of the tactic that Palin has made legend: it is attempting the change the subject to distract from the fact that it has no acceptable answer to the question posed. And like Palin, who so flippantly boasted that no, she would not answer the question posed, the McCain campaign has made no effort to hide the fact that it is going negative precisely to avoid a debate on the issues, a debate which it has until now decidedly lost.

And so, we welcome again the William Ayers attacks into the campaign. Surely, the resurrection of the Ayers issue will be accompanied by the second coming of the Wright issue and the Rezko issue as Republicans attempt to shed a negative light on Obamas character.
